Getting started with Pilates workouts
Use this guide to prepare for a mat or reformer Pilates session. It offers practical starting points, not a personalised routine or a substitute for instruction from a qualified Pilates teacher.
Choose mat or reformer training
Mat Pilates uses floor-based movements, sometimes with accessories. Reformer Pilates uses a moving carriage and adjustable resistance. Do not assume a mat exercise transfers directly to a reformer. If you are new to either format, start with instruction suited to your experience and equipment.
Prepare for a mat session
Place your mat on a stable surface with room to move your arms and legs without obstruction. Choose a beginner session led by a qualified teacher. Keep accessories optional unless the session specifically requires them, and follow the teacher's instructions for positioning and movement.
Check your reformer before use
Follow your model's assembly, inspection and space-clearance instructions. Check the carriage, springs, straps and adjustable parts as directed by the manufacturer. Have a qualified instructor show you how to get on and off the machine and adjust its settings for each exercise.
Use exercise-specific settings
Spring colours and resistance vary between manufacturers. There is no universal beginner setting, and lighter resistance is not automatically easier for every movement. Use the settings specified for your equipment and exercise by your instructor. Do not copy another machine's setup without checking compatibility.
Keep your first sessions manageable
Choose movements you have been taught, allow time for setup between exercises and avoid rushing carriage movement. Follow your teacher's breathing and positioning cues. Record the session and any equipment settings so you can discuss questions with your instructor rather than guessing how to progress.
Stop if you experience pain or feel unwell. If you have an injury, are pregnant or have a health condition that may affect exercise, seek suitable professional guidance before starting.
