Getting started with barbell workouts

Use this guide to organise a barbell session around your experience and available equipment. It is a starting point, not a personalised training programme or a substitute for learning technique with a qualified trainer.

Check your equipment

Check that your bar, plates and collars are compatible. Inspect equipment before use and follow the manufacturer's loading and assembly instructions. Include the weight of the bar when recording your total load. Leave enough space around the bar to move and load it without obstruction.

Choose exercises suited to your setup

Barbell workouts can include movements such as squats, rows, deadlifts and presses. These require different skills and equipment; you do not need to include all of them in one session. Choose movements you have been taught to perform and for which you have an appropriate setup. An unloaded bar may still be too heavy for a beginner.

Plan your session

Begin with a brief warm-up and practise familiar movements using a manageable load. Work through one exercise at a time, allowing breaks between sets. Record the exercise, total load, sets and repetitions completed. Keep the session manageable rather than chasing a prescribed weight or repetition target.

Use racks and benches as intended

For exercises that require a rack or bench, check the equipment's load rating and adjustment instructions. Have a qualified trainer show you how to position supports and safety catches for your chosen exercise. Do not attempt a lift where you cannot safely return or release the bar.

Review before adding weight

Only consider increasing the load when you can repeat the movement with control. If you are unsure about technique or progression, ask a qualified trainer. Stop if you experience pain or feel unwell, and seek appropriate professional guidance.
