Getting started with dumbbell workouts
Use this guide to plan a simple dumbbell session around your equipment and experience. It is a starting point, not a personalised training programme.
Prepare your space and equipment
Allow room to move without hitting furniture. Check your dumbbells before use and, for adjustable models, secure the plates or locking mechanism according to the manufacturer's instructions. Choose a load you can control throughout the movement.
Choose your movements
A session might include a squat holding a dumbbell, a supported dumbbell row, and a dumbbell floor press. Choose only exercises you have learned to perform safely. If any movement is unfamiliar, ask a qualified trainer to demonstrate it before adding weight.
Build a manageable session
Start with a brief warm-up and practise your selected movements without weight or with a lighter load. Work through one exercise at a time, taking breaks as needed. Keep a note of the exercises, weights and repetitions you complete so you can plan your next session. Do not increase the load if it makes your movement difficult to control.
Adapt to your setup
If you use a bench, check that it is stable, correctly adjusted and suitable for the combined load. Follow the equipment's instructions rather than assuming every bench or dumbbell works the same way.
Stop if you experience pain or feel unwell. Seek appropriate professional guidance if you are unsure whether an exercise is suitable for you.
